AT MISISI - 2002
WHAT'S HAPPENING AT MISISI IN 2003?
Trust members saw many encouraging developments during their visit
in April 2003. With the strong spirit of commitment, together with
the generous help of donors in Zambia and overseas, Chitsime Association
at Misisi continues to pioneer and successfully operate a number
of vital community services.
The building of extra classrooms for the Community School and Special
Needs School - with funds donated by Rotary - is in full swing.
These classrooms will be utilised immediately as enrolment has reached
750 pupils.
The school provides free education from Pre-School to Grade 7 for
orphans and vulnerable children in Misisi.
An extra room for sick children has been added to the Special Needs
School, and playgrounds for children at both schools are being constructed
and equipped.
The St Lawrence Home of Hope for orphans and vulnerable children
has an average of 26 children. Many of them are steadily reintegrated
into their communities through the support of distant family members.
From the humble beginning of 3 empty containers, the enclosed project
now has water and electricity, a new sanitary block and their gardens
grow maize and vegetables.
HOW ARE THE INCOME GENERATING AREAS PROGRESSING?
The new Homecraft Centre is thriving with full and part-time students
studying tailoring and design, knitting and embroidery. They produce
tablecloths, clothes and baby clothes, aprons etc. A cafeteria is
sited next to it providing a valuable service for teachers, policemen
etc working on the site.
A new Carpentry Centre has opened with an instructor and 6 students.
Because of the development on the Misisi site, and the construction
of a feeder road from Kabwata, a considerable amount of building
is taking place nearby outside the Misisi boundary. This has given
a boost to the new Brick–Making venture producing significant
income.
The Maximill is being moved to a site within the Chitsime plot,
which will make it easier to operate and increase its customer base.
WHAT ABOUT COMMUNITY SERVICES?
The Misisi Home-Based Care Project is doing outstanding work. A
team of 55 volunteer community–based carers serves patients
living with HIV and TB in Misisi compound. It provides medicine,
counselling, advice and support and referral to other agencies.
HOW IS THE ZAMBIA TRUST HELPING?
In 2002 apart from securing funds (US$ 17,426) through Rotary for
the building and equipping of new classrooms, the Trust has assisted
development in the following areas: -
The School Feeding programme received ZK5.13 million, the Community
School ZK 2 million towards books and stationery, and the General
Fund ZK1.8 million for the general upkeep of the project. The Trust
is a main donor for promoting Income –Generated projects and
this year it is hoped that work will begin on establishing a farm
area and piggery.
