CELEBRATING LAW AND ORDER, THEN AND NOW
Members of the Northern Rhodesian Police Association are finalising
plans to return to Zambia for the 40th anniversary of the country’s
independence in September 2004. The organisation has established
a strong bond with the Zambia Police and raised around £7,
500 at the Millennium to buy a Toyota pickup – NRG 1 –
to help anti-poaching patrols in the Kafue National Park. “Reliable
reports tell us it is still going strong and we hope to check it
out next year, “ says NRPA chairman John Coates.
Of the 2004 visit he told Spotlight: “We see it as a celebration
of our force’s service to the country, and of its subsequent
independence.” The planned trip includes police colleagues
who settled in South Africa, and starts in Livingstone with a visit
to the divisional headquarters of the Zambia Police. The group goes
by road – via old station haunts like Choma, Monze, and Mazabuka
- to Lilayi and the Zambia Police Training College, to which they
have been invited by Inspector General Zunga Siakalima, and where
a ceremony will conclude with the police band beating the retreat.
The visit culminates in a joint celebration dinner at Lilayi Lodge.
“Apart from the fun of seeing old friends and visiting a
country we all loved, our aim is to celebrate our very real ties
with and affection for our Zambia Police colleagues; we also want
to show our gratitude for the opportunity we had to serve the country
and contribute to the building of the modern police force and the
establishment of law and order in Zambia,” says John Coates.
