CINYANJA BROADCASTER IDENTIFIED

Maurice from Cheltenham, the ex-Zambian who earlier this year charmed Matthew Bannister’s BBC Radio Five Live late-night team and thousands of listeners with his fluent Cinyanja, has been identified. He is Maurice Corbett, 69, a Northern Rhodesia Police officer from 1956-1963, who at Independence worked in Immigration, then became a magistrate and lawyer; he worked for Ellis and Company in Ndola from 1967-1977, when he left Zambia, and was identified for Spotlight by his old friend and neighbour, Zambia Society Trust member Paul Hoare.

“I was surprised and delighted to have the chance to say a few words in Cinyanja on Five Live. I waited expectantly for the offers of my own programme to come flooding in, but no joy yet - perhaps Michael Grade will contact me when he settles in!” he told us.

Matthew Bannister was discussing minority languages and Maurice responded because “although little heard outside Zambia and Malawi, Cinyanja is a beautiful and important language.” On air, in Nyanja, he told listeners to go to Luangwa, where it was spoken and where they would see a superb game park.
