The Australian Rugby connection
George Gregan, Zambia-born captain of the Wallabies, Australia’s
national Rugby Union team, was made a member of the Order of Australia
(OA) at the Queen's Birthday Honours earlier this year. Gregan’s
second name is Musuruwa and he was born in Lusaka on April 19, 1973.
His mother was Zimbabwean, his father Scottish and the family emigrated
to Australia in the 1970s. At 32, scrum-half George is retiring
as captain this year and though his team was defeated by England
in the 2003 World Cup, the Wallabies triumphed at Twickenham in
June.
