Spotlight - Summer 2004

edited by Maggie and Pippa Currey

Time, Gentleman

On 8 and 9 July over 100 people connected with the Ndola Golf Club met at Ullesthorpe Court Golf Club in Leicestershire for the last-ever tournament to be run by Geoff Robinson, who for the past 27 years has organised the highly successful annual event for ex-Zambians from 12 countries. Geoff, an erstwhile Ndola Golf Club captain, has called ‘time’ – at least on the larger gatherings in England because “there have been so many good gatherings and I want to bow out while the event is remembered for these, and not for the faces that may be missing in future,” he tells Spotlight. He stresses however that smaller groups of golfers will continue to meet all over the country and that around 120 members have twice in recent years gathered in Natal, South Africa. Geoff emigrated to Northern Rhodesia in 1956 and worked for what became Monterey Packaging and Printing, of which, when he left Zambia in 1973, he was managing director. He married Ndola-born Maureen Kilfoil in 1960.
