'Tales of Zambia'
Tales of Zambia is a fascinating compilation of 86 stories about Zambia - characters from the early days, folk tales from the distant past, descriptions of unusual events - the death of Dr Livingstone, naval war on Lake Tanganyika, how Lundazi got its castle, the Broken Hill air crash ... how Cairo Road got its name, the meaning of kapenta, the legend of the Kongamato ... the tiger fish and the fish eagle, the white ant and the black lechwe ... Where the Copperbelt came from, how Katanga was lost, the tale of Count Caprivi's Strip ... There are stories of Zambia's national monuments and museums, the origins of the mining industry, the beginnings of the capital city ...
Dick Hobson, the author, lived in Africa for 40 years, half of them in Zambia. For a further 14 years he worked in the London office of Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines (ZCCM), and for over 30 years collected books about Zambia. From 1978 until 1994 he was Honorary Secretary first to the Zambia Society and later to the Zambia Society Trust; he also compiled and edited until 1999 the press summaries under the title News from Zambia that have enabled so many friends of Zambia in the UK and around the world to stay in touch with developments there.
In his introduction to this book, Dick wrote: "It is my tribute to the many happy years that my family and I spent there, and, I hope, the means of giving something back.." Sadly, Dick died in 2002.
